Uber Launches Robotaxi Service in Dallas: Growth Story Hotting up?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • UBER launched a robotaxi service in Dallas using AVs from Nebius-owned autonomous vehicle maker Avride.
  • The service initially covers 9 square miles, with plans to expand the operating area over time.
  • UBER's global AV push includes partnerships with Waymo in the U.S. and WeRide in Abu Dhabi.

In line with its efforts to expand in the lucrative self-driving vehicle market, Uber Technologies (UBER - Free Report) launched a new robotaxi service in Dallas. For this purpose, Uber is deploying a fleet of autonomous vehicles developed by Avride, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nebius Group N.V. (NBIS - Free Report) . Nebius, based in the Netherlands, is a high-velocity pure play building AI-first infrastructure from the ground up. Avride develops and operates both autonomous cars and delivery robots.

Coming back to Uber’s robotaxi launch, Dallas riders can now be matched with an Avride robotaxi, introducing a fresh new way to travel with Uber. More specifically, Dallas riders who request UberX, Uber Comfort or Uber Comfort Electric may be paired with an all-electric Avride robotaxi at no extra charge.

Each time one is available, the app will notify the rider, who can choose to take the AV trip or switch to a standard, non-autonomous ride. The service will initially cover a nine-square-mile area of Dallas — spanning Downtown, Uptown, Turtle Creek and Deep Ellum — with plans to broaden the operating zone over time.

In the United States, Uber already provides robotaxi access in Austin, Phoenix and Atlanta via Alphabet’s (GOOGL - Free Report) Waymo network. Alphabet’s Waymo is a force to be reckoned with in the evolving and lucrative space. Alphabet, through its Waymo arm, already has commercial operations in several cities across the United States. Recently, Uber, along with WeRide (WRD - Free Report) , a Chinese autonomous vehicle company, launched a commercial robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi. The rollout is the first commercial driverless robotaxi offering in the Middle East. Following the launch in Abu Dhabi, customers requesting UberX or Uber Comfort may be assigned a WeRide autonomous vehicle.

Driverless supply can reduce long-term trip costs, improve reliability during peak demand and offer a repeatable model for integrating more AV partners in new cities, expanding Uber’s reach. The launches in Abu Dhabi and Dallas are steps toward turning robotaxis from a futuristic concept into a global transportation reality.
